Columba (571-597AD) is one of Britain's greatest Celtic saints, anlong with Patrick and David. He was born in Ireland but travelled to Scotland in 563 and evangelised the Picts and Scots there. He died on the Scottish isle of Iona, and was buried there, but later his remains were removed back to Ireland where he is buried at Downpatrick, County Down. Columba's greatest legacy is the revitalisation of monasticism in the British Isles.
Brigit's relics were taken to Downpatrick, where they were interred in the tomb of Patrick and Columba. The relics of the three saints were discovered in 1185, and on June 9 of the following year were reinterred in Down Cathedral.
