Is it illegal to eat dogs?

Eating dogs should be considered natural of men, like eating other animals. The question of illegality is raised because many peoples (the English for example) considered dogs man's best friends, so it is inhuman to eat... your friends. In some countries, this eating act is illegal, and in some others this is legal. Eating dogs is only illegal in a country that bans this act. That statement is not universally accepted.

Biologically, there's no difference between a human eating a dog and a human eating a cow. But there are cultural implications. In many Western cultures, it is often viewed as immoral to eat dog while in some Eastern cultures, it is common.

So there is nothing inherently wrong about eating this particular animal; however, most Western societies have formed a relationship with the animal through domestication, and eating them is viewed as wrong.

Humans should not eat wet dog food because it contains ground up bones. While canines can chew and digest these bone fragments, the human digestive tract cannot. A bone fragment can tear any internal structure, or perforate the intestines (a surgical emergency). So there is a significant health risk for humans eating dog food.

If you mean eating the meat of a dog, some cultures view this as acceptable, though the act is decried as barbaric in other cultures. I suppose it would also depend on a person's ability to get another type of meat.

It is done as a source of cheap protein. However, it is not advisable. The inspection process is almost none existent at pet food manufacturers. Standards for pet foods are not near as stringent as for human consumption. The allowable rate for "other" material is set much higher and that means bug parts and fecal matter.

If you have any doubt about the lack of inspection consider the massive pet food scandal that recently took place in 2008 where hundreds if not thousands of pets were poisoned by contaminated wheat germ imported from China. Law suits are still pending.
