What happens to the animals used in animal testing?

Many people use animals for testing products such as toothepaste or makeup. They want to test them on animals because then they can find out if it causes irritations or if it is a good product to sell. They sometimes also use animals for testing drugs and fluids.

It depends on the type of testing the animal was part of:

1. Some animal testing requires the animals to be killed as part of the experiment; the animals are killed in a humane manner (such as injectable euthanasia).

2. Some animal testing covers the life span of the animal, such as in longevity studies (there was a really nice one from Purina showing dogs kept at a healthy weight all their lives live on average two years longer than overweight dogs) - the study doesn't end until the animal dies, but it is not deliberately killed.

3. Some animal testing is for a specific period of an animal's life, after which it may be adopted or retired to live the rest of its life in comfort. A good portion of animal testing that is done on non-rodents (such as dogs, cats, horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, etc.) is handled like this.
