A sort of mixture of the ( looks are not important) idea current in some Fairy Tales ( but usually there is a second-stage booster- the Ugy Duckling grows up to be a beautiful Swan, for example) and a paen against cruelty to animals. the story is written in the First Paw- can"t say person. I tried to read it when in Grammar school, found it very depressing ( and this is in a city, not the wilds of Alaska- as in Call of the Wild) and the blind, pointless animal suffering turned me off. In contrast the morbid and lachrymose ( Lassie) was never abused by her loving owners- the Martin family in the TV version. The dog tells the story, which is wacko and maybe the author was mentally ill. ( The notion of somebody imagining themselves to be a dog is not that rare among mental illnesses). it"s called Cynanthropy, by the way.
