Never. I say never because a dog will not understand why other than you cannot be trusted. It tells them that you will hurt them for no reason. Dogs have a very short attention span. It they do something wrong or bad and you punish them for it two minutes later, they will not understand why. When wild dogs do something wrong in the pack, the other dogs do not hit them. I suggest that you take a dog obedience class. It will teach the dog and YOU many things that will make both of your lives easier and more enjoyable. I took the class. They are fun. Contact your local ASPCA or animal shelter and ask them about classes. They're not expensive and may even be free.
