Speech arose in the last two million years. Using the tongue to modulate speech sets us apart from other animals, and allows up to use the learning and understandings of prior generations and thus build on it.

Also the use of fire for cooking. Cooking kills harmful parasites and germs in food and allowed us to divest our large bellies which in turn allowed us to stand and walk upright, which has many advantages.

The development of farming which lead to the creation of communities and a more efficient food supply. This in turn led to the ability of people to specialize in trades and make technological advancements.
