The first distributor less cars started appearing in the mid 1980s the last distributor being produced in about 1990
On most cars the firing order is stamped on the intake manifold. the only thing you will sometimes will find on the distributor cap is the number 1 showing the location of the wire that goes to the number one plug.
These cars do not have a distributor or gasket. They are run on a coil pack which is controlled by the ECM.

this is a common problem on these cars.....the distributor is likely the problem.

Coil packs are analogous to the old distributor systems. Most modern cars do not use distributors anymore. Instead the ignition systems are completely electronic.
by a mechanic you have to use a hand held computer you can not do it by the distributor as older cars could do.
