To install a backup light switch in a 1968 Mustang with a Toploader 4-speed transmission, first, locate the backup light switch mounting area on the transmission. Remove the existing cover or plug, and then install the new backup light switch, ensuring it is securely fastened. Connect the wiring harness to the switch, making sure to follow the original wiring diagram for proper connections. Look on the drivers side of the tranny at the shifter linkage.You'll need to pop the kick-down cable off and then remove the two small bolts
Those switches are all located where the shifter attaches to the top of the transmission, on the shifter iself.

Not sure on how to replace it, but it is located INSIDE your center console (which will need to be removed if you cant get to it by removing the shift boot) it is a pressure switch at the base of the handle...
