Roanoke was the first English colony attempted in 1585, but it ultimately failed. Jamestown, established in 1607, became the first successful enduring English colony in North America.
The colony of Roanoke was set up by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1585, with John White leading the expedition.
John White attempted to set up Roanoke Island the second time. He led a group of colonists known as the "Lost Colony" in 1587, but when he returned to England for supplies and reinforcements, he was delayed by the Anglo-Spanish War. When he finally returned in 1590, the colonists had vanished, leading to the mystery of the Lost Colony.
In Roanoke the native Americans lived and Sir Walter raliegh had set rules on good behaviour to the Native Americans however these rules were ignored and the native Americans left to plan an attack but the colonists got there first...:(
Sir Walter Raleigh, got the idea for a permanent English settlement in the New World. Since Raleigh was willing to finance the venture out of his own pocket, Queen Elizabeth I agreed to the trip. Raleigh's first shipload of colonists set out in 1585. They chose for their settlement a small sandy island off the coast of what is now North Carolina. Because it was an island, Roanoke offered some protection from Indians. The shallow waters around it also protected the settlers from Spanish ships. But the spot that the settlers had chosen was too desolate. When Sir Francis Drake stopped by after one of his raids on the Spanish treasure ships, they went home with him. In 1587, Raleigh sent out another party of 150 colonists, but the war with Spain prevented him from contacting the settlement for four years. When a relief ship finally appeared at Roanoke in 1591, the colonists were gone. There were no bodies nor any signs of violence and only one clue - the word "Croatan" carved on a tree. The Croatans were neighboring Indians. Whether they attacked the settlement or whether the colonists gave up and went to live with the Indians we shall never know. This event in United States History, would become known as, "The Lost Colony."
The early explorer who set up a plantation relying on slave labor to extract gold was Christopher Columbus. He established the first Spanish colony in the Americas on the island of Hispaniola (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic) and implemented a system where indigenous people were forced to work in mines to extract gold.
First came the Roanoke colony that dissapeared mysteriously when the next ship came. Then Jamestown was founded. Jamestown was the first successful permanent English settlement.

The first English colonies in North America at Roanoke and Jamestown were set up in the hope of achieving profit, power, and spreading good ol' British influence. They were all about that colonial expansion life, trying to make a buck and show off their fancy European ways. Spoiler alert: things didn't always go as planned, but hey, at least they tried, right?
A representative type of government was established in Jamestown. It was originally set up as a money making charter colony.
