If the lines are contours - it signifies that the land is steeper the closer the lines are drawn
In order to "map" a terrain a cartographer needs to know how high or how low the soil is (land) from sea level. The physical makeup of earth, the physical map of places shows you land formations through the use of color which codes the particular place as being a certain distance above sea level. If the map was coded so that low elevation numbers (valleys) are dark and high elevations (mountains, peaks, plataues) are light, what you end up with is an image (likely shaded) which represents the "relief" of the place. Relief means 3 dimensional or sculptured in art. You can think of a map as a kind of art of the 3 dimensional physical world.
A map gives a miniature "picture" of a very large space. A map is a guide to a space you have not encountered before. Maps have distance, mountains, rivers, and shapes of places or destinations. With a map, one does not have to depend on local directions. For a small price, it is a direction finder and a dependable way to take a journey.
I think a compass is a good way to represent travel. Also, if you get a tattoo in the many places you travel to, what a great souvenir! The Japanese belive that koi fish represent "travelling through life" and they make gorgeous tattoos as well. I always thought that a silhouette of a hiker would be a cool "traveller" tattoo if that's the type of travelling you like to do. Just some ideas I thought of...more to come A globe or map might be another option, I went with a compass rose but it also had other features which represent a lot more than travel.

For example, think of all the different people you associate with different types of shoes: Dutch wooden shoes, athletic tennis shoes, surfer flip flops, Nazis boots. So they can also represent very common stereotypes.
