During Earth Hour, households and businesses are encouraged to turn off their lights and non-essential appliances for one hour in the evening. This includes famous landmarks which, by having their lights turned off, make a strong statement about how much energy we use every day, often unnecessarily.The purpose of Earth Hour is to raise awareness of global issues, particularly in regard to our overuse of non-renewable resources, and resultant light and air pollution. In 2009, the third year of Earth Hour, WWF urged people around the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes by the time world leaders for the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December 2009. At this meeting, government policies to take action against global warming were to be decided.
