mostly depends on the type of plastic and its surface
if its flexible plastic, then the paint will split and crack when the plastic is flexed
you can use a paint flexibilizer additive if you need to
if the surface of the plastic is very smooth, the paint will not be able to stick to it.
if its appropriate, lightly sand the surface to give it what painters call "tooth"
it just roughs up the surface a little bit to the paint wont just slide off it when dry
there any many types of plastics and some are very tricky to paint
Most likely auto enamel paint.

An enamel paint is a paint that dries to an especially hard, usually glossy, finish. Enamel paints sometimes contain glass powder or tiny metal flake fragments instead of the color pigments found in standard oil-based paints. Enamel paint is sometimes mixed with varnish or urethane to increase shine as well as assist its hardening process.
Enamel is a word used to describe a finish, not the formulation of a paint. It simply means a hard reflective surface. Many people mistakenly use the word enamel when referring to oil based paints. So. if you are asking if you can paint latex or acrylic paint over a latex or acrylic enamel the answer is yes, however, I strongly recommend you sand the old paint first to give the top coat "tooth". If you are asking about painting latex or acrylic over an oil based paint the answer is still yes, however you must first sand the old paint and apply a good quality primer to it. Check with a reputable paint retailer for the best brand in your area.
Yes, with a special enamel used for that purpose. ------------------------------ Yes, it is best left to a professional to paint it electrostatically with epoxy enamel (or other) paint. They do it in your home without having to move the tub. It not expensive.

Yes it can. In most instances, the acrylic will actually protect metals without damaging the base metal as it is plastic to begin with. However do not expect it to be permanent. In order for the artwork to be permanent, it needs to be in baked enamel.

Enamel paint can be used on porcelain or iron bathtubs with great results, so I'll walk you through this process, just in case you're unsure about how to do this. You Will Need These MaterialsWhite vinegar WaterTowel Palm sander 150-grit sandpaperRespirator mask Plastic bag Tape Epoxy enamel spray paint Oil based primer Oil based enamel paint 1200-grit wet/dry sandpaper InstructionsClean the bath tub thoroughly with a mixture of white vinegar and water. The vinegar will help remove any dirt or greasy residue on the tub. Rinse the tub to remove the vinegar and dry it with a towel.Equip a palm sander with 150-grit sandpaper. Sand the inside and the outside of the tub to roughen the surface, this will allow the paint to properly adhere to the bathtub.Remove the fixtures of the bathtub or cover the fixtures with a plastic bag. Tape the bag down at the base of the fixtures to prevent painting them when you paint the inside of the tub.Spray the inside of the bathtub with an epoxy enamel spray paint such as Krylon epoxy enamel paint. These paints are available at most home improvement stores and will resist moisture which is necessary for paint on the inside of a bathtub.5 Paint the outside of the tub with an oil based metal primer such as Rust-Oleum metal primer. Let the primer dry completely.Apply a coat of oil based enamel paint to the outside of the tub. Let the first coat of paint dry and then apply a second coat.Sand the second coat of paint with 1200-grit wet/dry sandpaper used wet. If the base coat used in your project is water base then yes, you bet you can. If there is any chance that the base coat used was an oil base paint then you cannot paint directly over it. The acrylic enamel will not adhere to the oil base paint and will begin to peel off as soon as it is dry. In which case a coat of primer is in order.
