AnswerIf you have a top flap or bottom flap, it could be done. but NEVER pierce the 'outie' of your bellybutton! it is connected to your internal organs, and can cause severe damage. make sure that you have flaps, and if a piercer offers to pierce the 'outie' part, LEAVE! But if you don't have flaps, it can't be pierced.

An outie belly button is NOT connected to any organs internal, external or otherwise. It is merely the "stump" where your umbilical cord was. You CAN get it pierced and it even has a name. It is called a "true piercing" because you are actually piercing the belly button itself. It is no more dangerous than a "lip" or "flap" belly piercing. There's always a risk of infection with any type if puncture to the skin. Proper cleansing of your hands, the area, prior to piercing, sterilization of your gauged needles as well as jewelery. If you are careful to maintain a good sterile field, always keeping your hands prior to cleansing your outie while healing clean there's no more reason for infection to your outie than there is with any other type of piercing.

No professional body piercer who has any knowledge of anatomy will be stupid enough to piercer and outie or the umbilical knot. That is just asking for trouble and is solly an irresponsible act. I would suggest you look at a copy of Grey's Anatomy before you suggest a potentially dangerous action including Herniation and Peritonitis ( infection of the peritoneum { membrane lining the abdominal cavity }). The umbilical knot can in fact BE connected to internal organs (this may vary from person to person and is shear luck if it's not). The navel area is the shallowest or thinnest part of the thorax and piercing the actual knot can also perforate the small intestines. Yes some people have had the knot pierced, however it's important to point out there is a clear and ever present danger in this form of piercing and is really not worth the potential risks as apposed to conventional navel piercing.
