Why won't the brake warning light go off?

Four Possible reasons... Low brake fluid - check the brake fluid level in the master cylinder Emergency brake is on - check emergency brake Low brake fluid pressure - such as a broken brake line or a bad wheel cylinder. Check the master cylinder to see if it is empty. If you add fluid and pump the pedal you will probably see brake fluid on the ground or on the inside of the tires. Possibly a bad master cylinder. - The fluid will stay full but you will have no or little brake pressure. Could be air in the system as well. BE CAREFUL If you happen to add power steering fluid or transmission fluid to the master cylinder instead of brake fluid you will destroy the system. Make sure you use ONLY brake fluid and clean the master cylinder cap off with a clean rag first so no dirt gets into the braking system.

What happens if you put brake fluid in power steering fluid?

Not being a chemist, I'm not sure how the seals will react. I've heard stories about seal swelling problems when adding a wrong fluids to a system. I had tried an experiment, setting seals into different fluids to monitor swelling over a period of a week with no conclusive results. Since the fluids are different, you don't know how the properties aside from swelling will affect the power steering. Such as how well it compresses, viscosity and so on. I would flush the system this week if it was mine. pukenstein@aol.com

Can gear oil be used as power steering fluid for a 1991 ford explorer 4 0L four wheel drive I was told to use it by mechanic who fixed leaks?

NO NO AND NO. Never use any fluid in any other part of any car other than where it is supposed to go. The mechanic is a moron, I'm sorry to say that, and this goes for ANY CAR, ANY MAKE OR MODEL. Would you use motor oil in a brake master cyliner, Would you pour brake fluid in your engine? Would you pour coolant in your transmission? NO! Why? Because different fluids flow differently in their respective areas. Coolant is a liquid because it has to be able to move FREELY from the engine to the radiator and back again. Engine oil is thick because it generally has to stay in one place to keep the engine at a good temperature. Should you use gear oil for your power steering, (oh dear god I hope you don't) , you may wind up replacing your ENTIRE power steering system, which will cost a LOT. I'm talking about lines, pumps, etc. So, the answer is NO.

If you accidentally poured a small amount of power steering fluid instead of motor oil will it cause damage?

I would replace that unfortunate mixture with fresh power steering fluid using the recommended fluid for the type of vehichle. Some use ATF (automatic transmission fluid) or Mineral Type fluid or most commomly regular Power Steering Fluid. Now...to change the old fluid. Find the return line to the reservoir. This line will be near the top of the the reservoir and under much less pressure than the feed/suction line. With the engine OFF...disconnect the return line from the reservoir. Have a helper hold this hose into a bucket. Start the engine...do not rev it! SLOWLY turn the steering wheel all of the way to right..then all the way to the left..then return it to the center position. Turn off the engine. This will empty the system. NEXT..put the return hose back on and secure it. Fill the reservoir with new fluid and replace the cap. Start the engine and repeat the wheel turning step once again. Stop the engine and check the fluid level. Fill the reservoir to the specified level. PRESTO!!! You should be in good shape as far as the power steering fluid. . John In Montana

What kind of power steering fluid is used in a 1989 Buick Riviera?

I believe that any kind of power steering fluid will work. You can actually use any type of hydraulic fluid (i.e. brake, power steering, or transmission). It is usually best to use only power steering fluid if you can get it.

Can you use power steering fluid for hydraulic brake?

NO. In most vehicles the brake fluid is different from power steering fluid. It may work for a while, BUT is it worth taking risks with your brakes. Your life may depend on that.

Will brake fluid cause damage if you use it as power steering fluid?

YES! Brake fluid is pretty nasty stuff. It'll eat up paint, if spilled, etc. I'd leave it to the brake reservoir only. HOWEVER, you CAN substitute Automatic Transmission Fluid for power steering fluid. Top off if in an emergency if you need to, but if you're gonna use ATF permanently, I'd flush out the power steering system first and refill with ATF so they dont mix...
