Could the image be displayed faster in Google Earth if data compression was used?

too a certan degree it will. the downside is, when you compress a immage the data is often lost. you are in other words not able to get the hi definition. it might be posible to do it and improve the vieving. but it is a lot of work.

Data compression makes the data transferred from the server to the client smaller and faster to transmit. One downside is the client must decompress the data locally when received at the client which is typically much faster than the time to transmit a much larger data file over the network.

Data compression is used on data from Google map and imagery servers that is received by Google Earth clients. The imagery is typically PNG which uses a lossless data compression and vector/feature data for layers as KMZ formatted content which is compressed KML data. Google Earth clients also uses caching and tiling/chipping techniques to only load data when it is needed and only what data is needed.
