Athens had slaves male and female, who served families in their everyday farming and domestic life. There were also public slaves who were used in state buildings and activities. Even the archers of the army were Scythian slaves, who also doubled as a police force.

Sparta had helots - serfs who had a plot of land to which they were bound and gave part of their produce to the Spartan they were allotted to. They were also used as light infantry and archers for the army.

Athenian slaves were property of their individual owners and could be bought, used as workers and sold.

Sparta had serfs known as the helots. As serfs, they were bound to their land, and provided half their produce to the state, which supported the Spartan citizens. The serfs were also used as light infantry in the Spartan army, and could earn en end to their serfdom for outstanding service.

Slaves from Sparta did ALL of the every day work. The pretty much managed the whole economy, doing jobs such as messengers, farmers, etc. This is because all the Spartan citizens who were male were serving in the army. Slaves from Athens did work like Spartan slaves, however they could not advance in their job as far as Spartan slaves could. I now that Athens most likely had more slaves due to "capture and control" in which the citizens of a land they conquerd became slaves. Sparta had less because they hated foreigners, thus wanting to limit the amount of slaves they had. They hated foreigners because with new people come new ideas. They were afraid new ideas would change their culture. Also, slaves from Athens could not vote or do anything political. It is unclear to me whether Spartan slaves could enter politics, or if that was left for the elder Spartan citizens. Hope this helps.

Athens had a large slave population perhaps about a third of its total population. These were owned by the citizens and had no rights.

Sparta had a large population of serfs (bound to the land) who tilled their land and rendered half their produce to Sparta.
