Some ball joints are pressed in and others are bolted in, it depends on your style ball joints.
usually you have to press, or pound with a hammer...if the joints are riveted in you need to break the rivets, perhaps with a chisel...on rare occasion the joints are not servicable and the whole control arm need to be replaced
Replacing ball joints is very labor intensive, and should not be done at home if you are not experienced at auto repair. A very quick generalized rundown of the procedure is: Raise and support vehicle Remove wheel Remove tie rod nut Separate tie rod from knuckle Remove brake caliper and rotor Remove front axle nut(on 4X4 models) Remove or unplug ABS sensor if equipped Support lower control arm with jack Remove upper ball joint nut Separate upper ball joint Remove lower ball joint nut Separate lower ball joint Remove steering knuckle assembly with hub and all from vehicle. Use ball joint press to remove and replace ball joints. Reverse procedure to put car back together. Repeat for other side.
YOU CAN GET A FEW YEARS OUT OF A SET OF BALL JOINTS, BUT THEY WILL NEED TO BE GREASED REGULARLY. USUALLY YOU WOULD HAVE THEM GREASED AT THE SAME TIME AS YOU HAVE YOU CAR SERVICED(OIL CHANGE ECT). A NEW SET OF BALL JOINTS MUST BE INSTALLED CORRECTLY USING THE PROPER TOOLS OR BY A PROFESSIONAL. SOME MANUFACTURERS OF AFTER MARKET PARTS HAVE POOR QUALITY PARTS AND THEY DO NOT LAST AS LONG AS THE ORIGINAL MANUFACTURERS PARTS DO. MY FATHRE HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH HIS CHEV SUBURBAN. WE HAD TO REPLACE THE BOTTOM BALL JOINTS A SECOND TIME WHEN WE HAD ONLY A REPLACED THEM A YEAR BEFORE. LUCKLIY FOR US THE MANUFACTURER OF THE AFTER MARKET PARTS HAD A WARRNTY ON THE BALLJOINTS AND WE HAD THE PARTS REPLACED WITH A NEW SET FREE. YOU MAY WANT TO CHECK WITH THE PART SUPPLIER YOU PURCHASED YOUR PARTS FROM TO SEE IF ANY WARRANTIES APPLY.
Ball joints only really need to replaced when they are going bad. Usually you can tell if you put one hand on the 12 oclock position and the other on the 6 oclock position and try to wiggle the the tire. If it wiggles this way then ball joints are going bad. (Jack the vehicle up first). If you put one hand on the 3 oclock and the other in the 9 oclock position and wiggle it and it moves then the tie rods are going bad. If the whole tire moves in and out then the bearings are usually going bad. Hope this helps.
Some play in the steering, the inside or outside edge of the tire may be worn down more. Jack the wheel off the ground, grab the top and bottom edge and see if it has play in it. This means the ball joints are worn. Grabbing the sides and wiggling means the tie rods or steering linkage is worn. Front wheel drive only have a lower ball joint, the top is attached to the strut. Rear wheel drive have upper and lower ball joints and one or both may need replacing.
You need to have a "Ball joint press".
you will probably need a ball joint press and a splitter
You need a ball joint press to do that job. Remove old ball joint with sledge hammer and press new on into control arm.
You need to remove the spindle and press out the ball joints & press in new ones
In the Standard Beetle the ball joints are pressed into the trailing arms. You need a special press tool to replace these. In the Super Beetle the ball joint is part of the lower control arm, you replace the arm when the ball joint is worn out.
i suggest you replace upper and lowers at yhe same time, you will need a ball joint press either way. but you need to remove steering knuckle as a unit. then press in/out ball joints. not a big deal i you have the tools ,you also could bring the steering knucle to a shop have them press the ball joints in .then reinstall knuckle yourself.
This depends on upper or lower ball joints. If you need to replace the upper ball joints, you must replace the upper control arm. For the lowers, you will need a ball joint press, and some snap ring pliers. Be careful with the spring when taking the spindle apart from the control arms. (spring type suspension) Have to unload the torsion bar (Torsion Bar suspension) You will need a special tool to do this

how do you replace ball joints on a 2000 envoy
Need to know what vehicle and what year for an answer
No you do not need a press. I recently did upper and lower ball joints on my 95 T Bird and it is all bolt on parts. you cant buy just the ball joint, you have to get the whole control arm with the sealed ball joints already in it.
you need to press them in.if you put your ball joints in the freezer overnight they will shrink. Then heat up your a- arm with a torch and use a jack to pop the frozen ball joints in
