The idea of turning ones lights off at a certain time on Earth Day is to provide unity and show that everyone is recognizing the saving of energy at the same time. By everyone doing this at the same time it makes a stronger point.

Not at all. The earth hour is a global movment which is amid to save energy and not waste energy. Every year there is new theme where earth hour participants work, but main focus is always on saving resources. In 2020, focus is on climate change and bushfire in Australia.
