Like any other river, it flows downhill. Upper Egypt (south) has very high elevation and the Nile starts in Ethiopia which also has high elevation. The Nile flows down the river into Lower Egypt (north) and into the Mediterranean Sea. To be precise, the Nile starts in Burundi where its headwaters drains North through Rwanda, the Kagera river on the border of Rwanda-Tanzania and Tanzania Uganda, and into Lake Nyanza (a.k.a Victoria) which drains intop the Nile in Uganda
