mp3 was formerly known as MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3. MPEG is a digital encoding format used for transmitting audio sounds and pictures. MPEG stands for Moving Picture Experts Group, the body which established standards for video and audio formats for use by computer-based media communication systems. The MPEG-1 format standard was some two years in development, during the years1990-92. There is also MPEG-2 etc. Whereas MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 is used for PCs, portable music devices and internet applications, MPEG-1 Audio Layer 2 is used predominantly for audio broadcasting (radio/television).
