Sounds like the problem is with the trailer itself. Either it is wired incorrectly, or a wire has shorted against the frame.
If the fuse only blows after a while, a bare wire is probably rubbing the frame occasionally. This will be hard to test for, but you could get under the trailer and look at or feel the insulation, look for pinch points, and check the wiring in the lights and at any junctions.
If the fuse blows immediately, use a multimeter to find one or more pairs of wires with almost 0 resistance. Remember that 12V trailer lights don't have much resistance - look for the combination of wires with the lowest resistance and start there. Also remember to check from each wire to the frame of the trailer. Your attachment point on the trailer should be either bare metal, or a bolt that isn't rusty. Paint and rust will act as insulation.

I use the public library. They have an entire section of automotive reference books including professional manual with wiring diagrams that are much better than those found in do-it-yourself manuals.
Remove wiring harnesses, unbolt it, remove from engine. Install new alternator, apply tension using bar, bolt it, hookup wiring harnesses.

If the motor is the same the wiring harness should fit. Only thing I would check is the sending units. As long as both vehicles have gauges or both have warning lights all should be fine.

Under the dash on the driver side. Follow the wiring harness back from the fuse box. It's about six inches back and is taped on to the wiring harness.
