It would have been because he probably used a large format cameras (5x4, 10x8) to take a lot of the images. The large format negatives do not need much enlargement. A 16x20 print from a 5x4 negative is only a little over 3 times enlargement. The same size image from a small neg. would not have the same quality.

What is ansel adams known for?

Ansel Adams was a master of "previsualization" and is considered to be the inventor of the Zone system. Using these two techniques and his sometimes unique perspective, he produced negatives that were technically superior, which resulted in outstanding prints. He seldom had to manipulate his prints in the darkroom to produce the quality that he is famous for. Ummm... the final line of the above answer is totally incorrect. Ansel was literally famous among photographers for how much time he spent in the darkroom revising his prints. The Zone System got his initial exposures correct, but that's just the starting point, not the finishing point.

Why include the clear film edge in a printing exposure test?

The clear edge gives the maximum black. You're trying to print an image that has detail at all tones--the whitest whites have detail, the blackest blacks do and all the grays do as well. If you expose the print too much, the blacks will start to close up and you'll lose detail--also the whites will start to turn gray. If you don't expose it enough, the whites will lose detail and the blacks will start to go gray. When you make your test, you want to choose the least exposure that will give you a solid black on the film edge.
