A 16x20 print from a 5x4 negative is only a little over 3 times enlargement. The same size image from a small neg. would not have the same quality.

Use with much detail or in great detail.
The clear edge gives the maximum black. You're trying to print an image that has detail at all tones--the whitest whites have detail, the blackest blacks do and all the grays do as well. If you expose the print too much, the blacks will start to close up and you'll lose detail--also the whites will start to turn gray. If you don't expose it enough, the whites will lose detail and the blacks will start to go gray. When you make your test, you want to choose the least exposure that will give you a solid black on the film edge.
