Both Napoleon and Hitler thought they could easily conquer Russia. They both failed dismally. Not only were the Russians prepared to throw thousands of their armed forces into battle, but they also destroyed any food and shelter the French and (later the Germans) could use as the Russians retreated further into the interior of Russia. Then came the notorious Russian weather. Neither the French or the Germans were suitably equipped or supplied to withstand the bitter Russian cold.
