Fine art generally refers to works, in a variety of media, that were created to be presented, viewed and valued based entirely on the consideration of their artistic merits. (Or, a consideration of the concepts behind the work.) By contrast, the applied arts refers to the effort to infuse various forms of design with an artistic sensibility that will result in functional products that are also aesthetically pleasing. Picasso's painting "Les Desmoiselles D'avignon", for example, is a work of fine art that was not intended to have any function beyond the presentation of an image. A lamp designed by Tiffany, however, is intended to function as a lighting fixture, yet also employs the artistic qualities of applied design: combining form and function to produce something useful and attractive.
