there are no sprockets on a car

Feel free to correct me but I believe cars with timing chains have sprockets. Anyway, typical sprockets would be the gear-like pulleys that a bicycle chain runs on. They are considered different from gears in that they do not mesh directly, but use a chain or other device to connect them.

Also I believe the power window feature of a car uses a sproket assembly.
