What year is the car? I had to change the belt in my '92 earlier this year. It was a bit of a pain, but knowing where TDC was the key. For the '92, TDC is about 2:30ish on the crank ... the plasic housing is the key, if you look closely you will see the timing indicator on the back plastic housing. ... They rate the engine an interference engine, so becareful of the valves.

if you haven't changed the timing belt recently, you might as well change the timing belt, water pump, and both idler pulley and timing belt tensioner. This way you can set the timing with the proper tools, that's probably what you'll have to do anyhow since the belt moved, hopefully it didn't damage any valves when you tried to start it and the belt was off timing.
