Set the parking brake and put the truck in neutral. Block the wheels to make sure it won't go anywhere. Now get under the truck and turn the driveshaft back and forth. The part that goes into the rear differential will have a little play, but not much. Now push the shaft up and down, and back and forth. Look at the U-joints. The crosses should have no play in the cups.
Bad u-joints are the main reason for a clunk going into gear. If they are ok, drain the differential oil and check for metal. A little bit of very fine graphite-looking debris is ok, but visible metal chips are not.

most likely you have a collapsed valve lifter. try changing the oil and adding a high viscosity oil treatment. if problem persists, lifters, pushrod 's, rocker arms and valve springs must be removed for inspection, such as wear or a worn spring. sometimes taking of the valve covers's will reveal the source of the problem. another thing you can try is to take off spark plug wire at plug and run engine. engine will run rough, but if noise goes away, then the problem is associated with that set of valves.

I just replaced them in my 02 prerunner. The first step I did was to buy the Haynes manual(isbn-13: 978-1-56392-626-6) It was rather simple, I ended up taking off the brush guard and the radiator fan and shroud to gain access to the alternator belt tensioner. All the belt deflection requirements are listed in the haynes book. This project only requires moderate mechanical inclination. good luck

To gain access to the rear speakers in a Toyota Tacoma extended cab you have to remove the entire side rear plastic panel. The removal of the fold down seats may also be required but i know that you have to take that big piece off. Using one of those tools that pops out the panel connectors is useful when putting the panel back on. You will most likely be doing a lot of work taking stuff off so just remember where it goes.

After taking the fender off, removing six? screws not including the mud guard screws. You will be delighted to find 2 screws at the front of the door, 1 at the door bar in the middle and to my accounts, never was good at math; that should be it, unless you have power accessories then you will need to carefully unhook all those wires.
