Put a few drops in a small cup, mix with water. If it mixes you have latex or acrylic. If it won't mix, or does so then separates it's oil based. -Experienced painters can tell by the odour.

Put some in a small paper cup, now mix some water in. If it mixes easily, it's water based. If not, or if it mixes then separates, it's oil.

What is the difference between wood paint and alkyd paint?

Alkyd paint has a resin in it to help the oil in the paint dry faster, oil based paint in my opinion has a more vibrant colors, both in depth an brightness, waterbased seems to be toned down some-what. Wood paint can be either water based or oil based and even water soluble oil based. Oil based alkyd paint lately are used for things or areas that might receive abuse, and because of the slower drying time the oil based alkyd paint will show less brush marks then water based paint.

Why shouldn't you go over oil based paint with water based paint?

Oil based paint has a very hard surface which makes it difficult for water based paint to stick to properly. It should be primed first. Water based primer is fine. To make certain the water-based primer has good tooth, be sure to lightly sand the oil-based paint and wipe it down with a tack-cloth.
