All most all cars today have recommended tuneups at 60,000 or 100,000 miles due to the type of spark plugs being used. Consult your owners manual.
Needs new plugs, plug wires. Needs a tune up, needs the carburetor adjusted, needs higher octane fuel. It could have a plug wire or wires connected to the wrong one. It could need a new fuel filter.

Generally a tune up consists of spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor(DIS ignition has no cap/rotor), fuel filter, air filter, PCV valve. This is the general type. Others may define tune up another way and include other things. I define it this way. Going a bit further, there can be a timing belt replacement and further. But the general idea of tune up is the necessities I listed in the first line.

I've had this problem a couple of times with my 96 Ford Explorer. Either: 1. The car needs a tune up 2. A sensor is out and the car needs a tune up 3. Something is wrong with idle . . . needs to be checked The real answer is that you need to get to a mechanic asap . . . When the idle was loose, the car would die, but when a tune up was needed it ran rough without fully dying . . .
