I have never used I photo. It should work similar to other photo manipulating software. It usually means deleting the colour element of the image. You can create the duo effect by making part of the image - ie: the shadows a different colour to the rest. It is almost monochromatic in look. In Iphoto you can click on the pic to edit it. In the version I have you double click on the image that is open. This brings up edit controls. One of the choices is the 'effects' button. In there there are a number of selections to pick from. Just try which ever you want.
