You can't stain a door that is already sealed. You have to first remove the sealer down to bare wood so that the stain can penetrate into the wood to the color desired, then reseal with a polyurethane or spar varnish.

What type of brush is used to apply oil stain to a mahogany door?

A natural bristle brush is ideal for applying oil stain to a mahogany door, as it effectively holds and distributes the stain evenly. Alternatively, a foam brush can also be used for a smoother application and to minimize brush marks. It's important to choose a brush size that suits the door's details and contours for optimal results. Always remember to apply the stain in the direction of the wood grain for the best finish.

Can you add stain to stained door to change color?

Yes. Make sure you strip all clear finish off down to bare wood and stain. You can re-stain with same or darker color tone, but can't go lighter in tone. In order to go lighter you have to plane the wood down past the stain penetrating layer. good luck with your project.

Can you stain a white door?

If the door has a primer or a paint on it then no. Stain needs open grain to work. Stain seeps into the pores of the wood. If there is a coating, i.e. the primer or paint, then the stain will have nowhere to go. It will just sit on top of the coating until it is wiped off or dries in ugly blotches.
