How do you change the starter on a 1991 VW Fox?

I just fixed my starter but its my fourth one i went through...the first three were rebuilt and junk. the one i have now is used out of a wrecked jetta and its working great. well first you unhook the battery from the car then there are three wires total that you have to take off from the starter. one can be easily unplugged and the other two are connected to a bolt on the starter. unscrew the nut from the bolt and the two wires then can be pulled off. next there are three bolts you have to take out...before you take out the bolts make sure you have something holding up the transmission (next to the oil pan under the car) when you take the bolts out it will drop a little but it wont fall out. there are two bolts undernearth the starter and one on top of the starter...the two underneath can only be accessed to by getting under the car...there might be some brackets that will have to be taken out but it can be easily figured out...i got to go to my next class now...so good luck!

First you need to disconnect the battery to prevent any short circuit while removeng the rest of the components. then remove the intake manifold and plenum completely by first unpluging all the wiring connected to the tps, idle control sensor and MAF sensor. then unbolt the intake manifold from the cylinder head (9 bolts) once that's done you have to remove the mechanism for shifting gears in order to reach the 2 bolts that hold the starter to the transmission housing then disconnect the positive and negative wires from the starter's selenoid and you are done.

It's fairly easy, albeit a tight fit. Before you start, be sure to disconnect the battery. The starter is located between the firewall and the engine, underneath fuel injection assembly. Stick your hand in there and you should be able to feel how the starter is positioned. There are 2 or 3 bolts holding the starter and they're easy to remove. You need to disconnect the wire on the starter coil (the coil is located on top of the starter itself).

Now the fun part: removing the the starter itself. The way I did it is by wriggling it out the open space on the left side of the engine, hence the tight fit. Move any cables or wires that may get in the way for more room. (Important advice: Remember, patience is a virtue!)And there ya go! To install/re-install the starter just do the reverse. It's a lot easier to put it back in than removing it.

Put front of car on jackstands or ramps. crawl under the front, right in the middle of the car... about 2 feet from front bumper should be your starter... Oh, disconnect negative side of battery first... remove wires from starter... remove the black plastic cover to get at the bolts (pull it forward), remove the two bolts holding starter slowly, careful not to drop the starter, they are heavy, awkward, and can leave quite a dent in your forehead...replacement is the reverse of removal...

your starter is on the bottom of the car in the driver side of the engine take the two bolts that holds it in place and take the wire that is connected to it out and remember how to put it back the ground wire goes on the bolt that looks gold and the power wire goes to the red bolt then hook on the wire that conects to it and put it back in place

On my 93 fox, I jacked up the front end and supported it. Then disconnect the battery before you do anything else. Then you can see the starter on the passenger side of the engine from looking underneath. There are 2 wires that go to the starter, disconnect both wires, then unbolt the starter from the bellhousing, replace with new one and hook up your wires, then hook up battery and you;re good to go! It is on the rear of the engine area before the transmission. It has two or tree bolts that attach it to the engine or fly wheel area. Remove the battery connectors then look for another large wire that will go to to the starter or starter relay that then goes to the starter electrical terminal. If you find it you remove the bolts holding it counter clock wise - assuming it is a bad starter? LOL

Disconnect your battery, then remove the two nuts from the starter wire harness. Pull the wire and cable of the studs. Remove starter bolts and slide starter out of bellhosing.
