I had to replace a bulb a few weeks ago.
Option A)
Consult owners manual. It gives full description with pictures and all.
Option B)
If you lost your manual, try this. Drop the rear tailgate. Look on the side where the light meets the car and you will see two black plastic caps. Remove these to expose the screws that hold the light in place. Remove the two screws and light should be free to come out.
Unplug the power connection.
If replacing bulbs, use sprocket wrench to remove panel that holds the bulbs in.
Follow directions in reverse for re-assembly.
Turn on that fast blinking signal light and check to see if the front and rear signal lights are both working, chances are you have a burned out bulb. If both front and rear bulbs are flashing fast, replace the flasher relay.
The rear heater core is on the right side of the vehicle. It is behind the side panel just rear of the wheel.

check for bare wires or short in the wiring to the rear lights

When certain tail lights won't fit the Suburban with barn doors, it means they were not made for that vehicle or they are defective. The rear barn doors were discontinued on the Suburban in 2005.
Under the brake paddle there is a switch. You pull the switch out and replace it with another one.
the starter on a 1997 Suburban is on the side of the engine. It is at the rear where the transmission meets the engine.
