When the ABS light is on it is for a reason, a sensor could be bad, or another major problem. The light wont go off until the problem is corrected or until the light burns out

no the cams shouldn't turn if the chain is brokrn. It may be streched and or the tentioner may be worn out.

The abs light is on because there is a problem with the abs system. Until the problem is fixed the light will remain on. Once the problem is fixed the light will reset itself.

it is underneath the lower intake in the middle of the "valley" on V6 models. between the cylinder heads on the block. pretty big job. the knock sensor WILL NOT turn the check engine light on. it will store a code but NOT turn the light on. (i am a Nissan tech, trust me) it will effect the timing and fuel strategy though.
With the ignition off, ground terminal 8 on the data link connector. Turn on the ignition and the ABS warning light light will then begin to flash any codes stored. See the Chilton or Hayes manual for the Xterra to confirm which terminal is number 8. There are pictures and the related procedure in both these books.
To turn off the alarm, you insert the the key in the drivers door lock and turn the key to the right two times.
