A 4 cycle/stroke engine has 4 cycles (intake, compression, power, exhaust). On its intake step the piston goes down inside the cylinder and brings gas and air through the intake valve into the cylinder. On the compression step the intake valve closes and the piston comes back up compressing the gas and air. On power, the spark plug throws off a spark and ignites the gas and air in the cylinder sending the piston down with power to turn the crankshaft. Exhaust is the 4th step in a 4 cycle engine. The exhaust valve opens at the top of the cylinder and the piston is forced back up by the crankshaft pushing the leftover fumes out the valve. The exhaust is then pushed out through the exhaust pipe. This information is only accurate in a 4 cycle/stroke engine.
