What is the meaning of value in Art?

Value / ToneA very important element in, especially drawings and paintings, is value (or tone). In this context, value means light and dark. Sometimes referred to by the Italian word "chiaroscuro" (literally "light/dark"), value is often described visually by a scale with varying shades of gray arranged between black and white. But remember that colors have values also-what would you call a light value of red?Similar values distributed in patterns throughout a work of art can lead the viewer's eyes around the piece to receive the message the artist intended to send. Thus value is an important compositional device, but values can be used to create the illusion of space as well.

Is green a soft or dark color?

Colors, also called hues, are generally described by two factors: value and intensity (or saturation). Value is how light or dark a hue is. Intensity is how bright or muted a hue is. Describing a color as "soft" is somewhat subjective. A "soft green" usually refers to a more muted hue. But for some a lighter value of the hue may seem "soft". Dark green would refer to adding black or another color that contains black to the original hue. A muted green could be dark or light.

Why do artists require north light?

Direct sunlight is extremely bright and results in washed out colors and stark contrasting shadows. Sometimes this lends to the subject or mood of the art. A sunny beach scene with sun glistening onto the shoreline or a morning figure washed in light through a bedroom window are examples of when direct light is king. In contrast when you use indirect light commonly called north light or reflected light the atmosphere is much more controlled. The value shift is more subtle resulting in far greater control over contrast. Colors can be presented in all their subtleties. Light from a north facing window has helped produce some of the greatest paintings in history. If you look at wonderful still life paintings you will see why north light is preferred many times. Vermeer is best known for his north lit room in which many of his paintings were produced.

Can you explain different types of elements for art?

Artists use a language to describe certain aspects of art. There are six elements of art: Color, Line, Mass, Shape, Texture and Value (tones vary from dark to light, not monetary). These elements are present in every work of art.

What colors do you mix to make yellow?

Yellow can be mixed with the colors on each side of yellow on the color wheel - orange and green, but beware - it will be a very dull yellow, and probably darker in value than you want. This is why, in painting, yellow is a primary color. It is a very intense color of very light value. The colors you would try to mix it from - orange and green - are both darker in value and less intense. This is why the resulting mix is darker and duller than primary yellow. So if you want a light, bright yellow, you won't be able to mix it using paint.
