Human fertilization is the union of a humanoid egg and sperm, usually occurring in the ampulla of the uterine tube. The result of this union is the production of a zygote, or fertilized egg, initiating prenatal development. Scientists discovered the dynamics of human fertilization in the nineteenth century.[1]

The process of fertilization involves a sperm fusing with an ovum-usually following ejaculation during copulation. It is possible, but less common, for fertilization to occur without copulation, artificial insemination, or In vitrofertilization.[2][3][4] Upon encountering the ovum, the acrosome of the sperm produces enzymes which allow it to burrow through the outer jelly coat of the egg. The sperm plasma then fuses with the egg's plasma membrane, the sperm head disconnects from its flagellum and the egg travels down the Fallopian tube to reach the uterus.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a process by which egg cells are fertilized by sperm outside the womb, in vitro.

How is a test tube baby done?

When the woman is ovulating doctors retrieve her eggs. They do this by using an ultrasound needle that pierces the vaginal wall to the ovaries, which they can take out remove the eggs. Usually ten to thirty eggs are retrieved. The eggs are then prepared for fertilisation. Meanwhile, semen is being prepared, by being separated from the seminal fluid. Then, the sperm and egg are incubated together in a dish that is designed to hold growing cells. Usually the egg is fertilized after eighteen hours. Or the sperm could be injected directly to the egg. The fertilized egg is left for two days until it has several cells. Embryos are then transferred into the woman. Depending on the age of the woman the number of embryos vary. For older woman about three embryos are placed. The embryos are transferred through the woman's uterus with a thin catheter.
