How does the oil dipstick fit properly in the 1999 Dodge Neon Engine so it can read accurately when it seems to fit two ways that give different levels.?

I own a 99 Plymouth Neon Expresso with the 2.0 DOHC engine. I never noticed that there were two readings, but I ALWAYS put the dipstick with the metal strip flat against the engine. I hope you get what I mean.. for instance.. if the engine is a cube, and the dipstick a piece of paper, put the piece of paper flat against the cube. Hope it helps, my car is just fine, so I must be doing something right. Let me know if you find out I'm wrong.
