Depends on the vehicle and if it's rear wheel or front wheel drive. Some, like the Chevy pickups of the 70's and 80's you could do very easily. Then they began to build vehicles that they didn't want you to fix. Things got put in the way etc. Changing transmission on a modern front wheel drive minivan or SUV can be quite challenging and almost impossible unless you have a vehicle hoist.
The incorrect installation of the torque converter can be a costly mistake.

Putting the wrong fluid in destroys them. Heavy trailer loads wear the bands out faster also. Hard use, such as joy riding is hard on the transmission also..... Hmmm, maybe there is a reason the transmission go bad in my cars when my boys drive them.......
