Photographers are in essence professional artists who have built a reputation around what they have "captured" through their camera lense. A professional photographer is a person who has distinguished themselves through a good number of photo's that they have taken, and also has had his or her work (pictures) published in well-known magazines/websites/books/television, or other media outlets. Photographers can use either a still-image or motion picture camera. Photographers usually have given fields of Photography that they specialize in, and such areas can be in art, nature, sports, modeling, scenery, etc. A good example is the Photographer that owns a business (studio) who takes pictures for student year-books at schools. Such a photographer might not specialize in one of the afore-mentioned areas, but fits the profile of a photographer because he or she makes a living at taking professional pictures for groups or events such as schools, weddings, birthdays, and special occasions. A photographer usually has an assortment of high-priced cameras, lenses, film, a studio, and fancy developing equipment in some type of store-front location.

If you are wanting to get a job at a local retail store developing film for customers that have taken their own pictures, it's pretty automated because most of these retail outlets have automatic developing machines that take the hard work out of the employee's hands. However, if you feel that you have a stronger passion for photography, Stores like Sears have an in-store lab where customers can arrange to have a "photo shoot" done where a variety of backgrounds and other "props" can be facilitated to take really neat baby pictures, family pictures, or pictures for people's portfolios. Good luck to your endeavor!

Do most photographers get a degree in photography before they start work?

A degree isn't necessary to do photography for weddings and other events. Many people get a degree, but this is more useful as a job qualification in competitive photography arenas. If you would like to work in fine art, a degree in photography would be useful because you world learn art and photography history, and principles of art. For most photography jobs this isn't necessary. Experience counts most. If you aren't planning to earn a degree there are other ways to get a job as a photographer. Volunteer or start an internship with a photographer. You'll learn how to set up for a shoot, interact with customers, process film, and other practical skills. This kind of experience can help you begin a career as a photographer without a degree.
