Sand is essentially the result of finely weathered and eroded rock. Harder minerals (such as quartz for example) are found in larger amounts in sand due to their hardness and structure that prevents them from weathering at as fast a rate as minerals with a weaker structureless hardness. The term sand is used to describe the diameter of the individual sand granules. Sand is larger in diameter than silt but smaller than gravel.
