'Acute' means sudden onset or short course, as opposed to 'chronic' which means long duration or frequent recurrence.

What is left sided congestive heart failure?

Heart failure is a condition where the heart grows a lot larger due to it requiring a greater pumping force. This can be either due to increased blood volume or more likely, due to increased systemic resistance. A common cause of this is systemic atherosclerosis or aortic stenosis. The problem is, the large heart cannot be sustained for long and eventually the wall just thins out and becomes weak. So your heart can't pump out as much blood as before, giving you symptoms such as breathlessness, palpitations, fluid swelling, raised JVP etc.

How long can someone live with congestive heart failure. He has an enlarged heart twice the normal size a defibrillator and prescribed warafrin after ekg 1mth ago and still smokes and drinks.?

Persons with CHF can have a normal life span. An echocardiogram which is a simple non-invasive test can diagnose the severity of the CHF by examining the chambers of the heart and the overall strength of the heart muscle. Cardiomyopathy with enlarged heart times 2 is pretty serious. Smoking and drinking severely weakens the heart in general, and life expectancy depends on amount consumed/ smoked. warfarin is prescribed for dysrythmia for prevention of clot formation, but a person should not be drinking on it as it thins the blood and can cause complications such as hemmorhagic stroke, or internal bleeding elsewhere in the body. A defibrillator is only effective in life threatening dysrythmia and will not prevent further heart failure. By my best estimate as a past cardiac nurse, I'd say the person has 2 years maximum, sooner if the person is decompensated and requires frequent hospitalizations for excacerbations of symptoms ( severe swelling in ankles and feet, sudden weight gain, shortness of breath especially when lying down, anxiety++).

What research has been done on the Valsalva maneuver?

the Valsalva maneuver could predict mortality in elderly patients with congestive heart failure. This could prove to be a new noninvasive way to help determine how long elderly patients with congestive heart failure are expected to live.

What is congestive heart failure?

Congestive heart failure is when both the left and the right ventricle cannot function anymore. it'll lead to the low cardiac output and reduce in venous return. People with this problem classically will present as having lower limb/ sacral edema and also pleural effusion (fluid in lung). You can imagine the heart as a box which is so packed with sand that you can neither fill it in with sand anymore nor remove any sand from the box. Symptoms of congestive heart failure also consist of shortness of breath with simple tasks, coughing or inability to breathe when lying flat, chest discomfort and the feeling like you have a chest cold although you do not otherwise feel sick. There are other warning signs that vary from patient to patient.

Living With Congestive Heart Disease?

Congestive heart disease is a condition in which an individual's body becomes congested with fluids because the heart is unable to pump enough nutrients and oxygen to meet the needs of the kidneys and other vital organs. With congestive heart disease, an individual's heart becomes either too enlarged or too stiff to be able to pump blood efficiently throughout the body. This causes blood to move through the body at a slower rate. Over time, the slower blood flow causes the kidneys to malfunction and start retaining water and sodium. The fluid builds up in areas such as the ankles, feet, legs and lungs and eventually causes the body to become congested. Congestive heart disease is often also referred to as congestive heart failure (CHF).Causes of congestive heart failureCongestive heart disease is often caused by a narrowing of the coronary arteries as the result of a build-up of plaque and other fatty materials on the walls of the coronary arteries. Heart failure and heart disease can also result from a heart attack that damages all or part of an individual's heart muscle. In addition, conditions such as diabetes, kidney disease and thyroid disease can also cause heart muscles to get damaged and lead to heart disease.Symptoms of heart diseasePeople with congestive heart disease sometimes have no obvious symptoms of the problem. In most cases though, the disease manifests itself in some way or the other. One common symptom of congestive heart failure is shortness of breath, wheezing and difficulty breathing because of fluid build-up in the lungs. Swollen ankles, swollen feet and a bloated abdomen are also common signs of congestive heart failure. Other symptoms include irregular and rapid heart beats, constant fatigue and weakness, nausea and loss of appetite.Treating congestive heart diseaseCongestive heart disease cannot be reversed. However, it can be managed and treated with medication. Some commonly used medications to treat congestive heart disease include ACE inhibitors for controlling hypertension, beta blockers for regulating blood pressure and oxygen use, diuretics to protect against fluid retention and nitroglycerin-based tables for treating chest pain. Regular exercise and a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables and low in meat and sodium, can go a long way in mitigating the symptoms of heart failure. Lifestyle changes that help individuals reduce stress and lose weight are also very beneficial in treating the symptoms of congestive heart disease.

How does a heart attack damage the liver?

A heart attack itself will not directly damage your liver unless it's related to long term heart failure. If you have right-side heart failure, your liver will not be affected. If you have left-side heart failure your liver may become enlarged.
