How long can you drive your car if the idler pulley is broken?

If an idler pulley is broken, I would advise not to drive it anywhere. It would effect the Power Steering, water pump, alternator and coolant fan causing you to get stuck on the road and possibly cost many more $$ in damage.

One easy method is to clean the pulley and pump shaft. Put the pulley in the kitchen oven at about 250 degrees long enough to come up to temperature. Depending on the pulley material, you can go to much higher temperatures. You couldn't get a steel pulley hot enough to hurt it in a kitchen oven. For every degree you increase the temperature of the pulley, the pulley including the shaft hole, gets larger. If possible reduce the temperature of the pump shaft. Use ice or a CO2 fire extinguisher. This makes the shaft smaller. The effect of making the pulley and it's shaft hole larger, and the shaft smaller should place you where the pulley doesn't need to be forced on the shaft Get the pulley and pump close. Dry the pump shaft. Pick up the pulley with hot pads or heavy gloves and simply slide it on the shaft by hand. This should be one swift, smooth motion and done with out stopping. Every time the pulley touches the pump shaft it will lose heat. and the shaft will gain heat until the pulley stops sliding freely. The idea of doing this this way is to avoid forcing any part of the pump shaft and maybe damaging the pump. I once used a charcoal fire and a cast iron dutch oven to install a wheel bearing on my boat trailer while camping. It worked slick.

Its real easy. 1st Get a breaker bar (an extremely long ratchet like a torque wrench). Locate the idler pulley and the size the bolt for a socket that holds the idler pulley on the idler arm (Hint: The idler pulley is just a pulley connected to a springloaded assembly attached to your enginge block putting pressure on the serpentine belt so it is tight around all the component pulleys (alternator, power steering, crankshaft, etc. pulleys).Using the correct size socket attached to the breaker bar for leverage put the socket onto the bolt head and pull or push the bolt head of the idler puller either forward or backward (which ever way causes the tension arm to move thus moving the idler pulley so that pressure is removed from the serpentine belt). Now remove the serpentine belt. A serpentine belt diagram should be located somewhere on a decal near the radiator or some other location under the hood...if not, before you remove the serpentine belt, map out the serpentines route with pen and paper so you can put the new one on the same exact way. When putting on the new belt you will again have to position the idler pulley usig the breaker bar and socket such that you can stretch the new belt over all the component pulleys...please note...you will only have one free hand when your doing this, so make it count and be patient...you will succeed. Looking at the engine/belts from the passenger side of the car, the tensioner pulley is to the left of the engine center-line and the idler pulley if more to the right. It is one of the longest belts I've ever changed so, it takes some wiggling to get it out and free from the car ... good luck

The idler pulley is near the top of the engine. Use a 15 MM (I think) socket on a long breaker bar, and turn the idler pulley arm so that the pulley moves away from the belt. You'll need to put the socket on the nut of the pulley, not on the arm itself. When the pulley is loose, you can pull the belt off. Some of the idler pulley arms have a square hole that accepts a 1/2 inch drive from a socket wrench breaker bar. But be careful. The serpentine belt routing is a little odd, and you'll want a picture to help you put it back. Make a drawing or take some pictures if you don't already have something from GM.

The easiest way is to get a serpentine belt tool. Available at Harbor Freight very reasonably priced. The Cavalier/Sunbird 3.1 has almost no room between the frame and the idler pulley. The idler pulley is in the "middle" of all other pulleys. To loosen the belt you pull it towards the front of the car. There is a 3/8 hole in the end of the pulley. You might be able to get a 3/8 drive ratchet in there but it won't be long enough to get the leverage to move the pulley. Either a piece of pipe slipped over the ratchet handle, or a deep socket with a long extension slipped over the handle will give you the leverage to move it. I've done it this way in the past, but the special tool is much easier.

Prevent. engine turning (DISCONNECT SPARK PLUG just in case) using bar through hole in lower (cutter) pulley - may need to tap down on lower pulley ( carefully - don't damage pulley ) to release pulley shaft from engine shaft ( this is keyed ). Locate new belt and re-assemble engine pulley. Route both belts and continue to reverse assembly.

In order to change the serpentine belt on a 2005 Pontiac sunfire you must first locate the idler pulley. You can do this buy finding the pulley that is attached to a steel arm about 6 inches long. These engines are transverse mounted meaning that you may have a difficult time locating this pulley if you do not know where it is or what it looks like. However if you can recognize the idler pulley you will need a long wrench or breaker bar. I believe the correct size socket or wrench for the pulley is a 15mm. If you are using a wrench position the wrench on the bolt so that the wrench is leaning as far to the front of the car as possible because you will need to push or pull it quite a ways towards the rear of the car to loosen the tension on the belt. Once you have accomplished this you can simply slide the belt off of the most readily accessible pulley and release the idler pulley. After removing the old belt be careful to route the new belt correctly. Incorrectly routing a belt could lead to severe problems. After routing the new belt around all other pulleys, pull the idler pulley back into position and work the belt onto it. This may be difficult as the belt will more than likely have a seemingly tighter fit than the old one. This is because the old one has been stretched out over time.

Remove the old belt and put a new one on. If you need to remove the adjustment assembly, to repair it or replace parts on it, it is held on by 3 12mm bolts. On my 1990 Astro Van w/ 4.3L engine and A/C the idler has a 3/8" dia. bolt 4" long (maybe 3 1/2" - it seemed a bit longer than necessary). I'm faced with moving the idler because the A/C bearing is failing and the A/C is no good. The new location requires a 6" long bolt so I'm assuming that would go for a vehicle that was sold without A/C.
