International maps often have multiple languages. A Swiss map may, for example, include French, German, Italian and English language.
A Japanese map may include Katakana, Hiragana and Kanji languages on the same map, so that people from different parts of the country can recognize the pronounciations used by others as well as the local symbols used.
It depends on the map and the scale of the map. Some places 2 inches could mean 100 miles and others it could mean 10 feet.
