Japan has a population of over 127 million and the casualties of the March 2011 earthquake (and resulting tsunami) were devastating but small (0.01%) in comparison to the entire population. The death toll was on the order of ten to twenty thousand. The deaths would have been considerably higher had the Japanese not evacuated much of the coastal areas.
the death toll has been recorded over 700 as of 1 March 2010.
A "large" earthquake can be a major or great earthquake, both of which can cause serious damage to people, animal life, and buildings.A major earthquake is one of magnitude 7 - 7.9 which can cause serious damage. A great earthquake has a magnitude 8.0 or greater which can completely destroy communities near the epicenter. The 9.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Japan on March 11, 2011, is an example of a very large or great earthquake.
It ruined their homes, the stores, their people, and their lives. Many towns along the coastal regions were completely destroyed. The death of friends, family, and local people caused upset in the survivors. There were those who after getting to safe ground from the earthquake, died because they had nowhere to run from the tsunami. There was a nuclear panic after a nuclear power plant went down. The people feared radiation poisoning from the leakage or radiation into the water.
It was a pretty terrible event that affected thousands of people. It can be confusing talking about the magnitude of an earthquake as different countries can use different scales (Japan uses a different one from the international standard as one example). The 28 March earthquake was Magnitude 8.6 as measured in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia at 4.09 pm in 2005. The extra energy release to go further up the scale is exponential (meaning that a magnitude 2 earthquake is much more than double the energy of a magnitude 1 earthquake).

The National Police Agency of Japan reported that as of March 2013 over 6,000 people were injured (not including the over 15,000 people that died) due to the major earthquake and tsunami on Friday, 11 March 2011.

During the Japanese earthquake in 2011, the Pacific Plate shifted approximately 8 meters (26 feet) horizontally and 2.5 meters (8 feet) vertically. This movement resulted in the devastating tsunami that caused widespread destruction.

The Japanese earthquake in March 2011 affected a broad range of people, including residents living in the affected areas, rescue workers, and individuals who were displaced from their homes. The impact extended to businesses, infrastructure, and communities across Japan.
