The WWWF was established in the early 60's then owned by Vince McMahon SR. In the late 70's the WWWF changed to the WWF. then the WWF changed their name to WWE because of the world wildlife fund. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Because the government was trying to baan the wwf because it was all about bonebreaking and stuff so mr McMahon made an agreement with them than not to show real wrestling to the fans so they decided to make it wwe. don't you notice the difference at first it was wwf (world wrestling federation)and now its wwe(world wrestling entertainment) that was federation and now it is entertaiment.See it makes sense. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The WWF/WWE has always been in the entertainment business but back in the day they didn't want us to know that.
World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has actually went by several names over the years. WWE was origionally called the Capitol Wrestling Corporiation and was owned by Vince McMahon Sr. and Toots Mondt. At this point the CWC was part of the National Wrestling Alliance. On January 24, 1963, NWA Heavyweight Champion Buddy Rogers lost a 2 out of 3 falls match to challenger Lou Thesz. Because Thesz won the last fall by disqualification, promoters in the northeast refused to acknowledge the title change. Those promoters, lead by Vince Sr., officially broke off from the National Wrestling Alliance and formed the World-Wide Wrestling Federation. Vince Sr. would eventually become full owner of the WWWF. In 1982, the WWWF was bought/inherited by Vincent Kennedy McMahon Jr. and renamed the World Wrestling Federation. On May 5th, 2002, after losing a legal battle with the World Wildlife Fund over the use of the initials WWF, the World Wrestling Federation was officially renamed World Wrestling Entertainment.
Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) was a professional wrestling promotion that was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1992 by Tod Gordon, and closed when his successor, Paul Heyman, declared bankruptcy in April 2001. The company became known for its loyal fan base as well as its tendency to push the envelope with storylines. The group has showcased many different styles of professional wrestling, ranging from lucha libre to hardcore wrestling.
Roderick McMahon grandfather of the current Vince K. McMahon started the company with legendary wrestler Toots Mondt as Capitol Wrestling Corporation which quickly became the richest wrestling company due to being the only promotion in a big, heavily populated territory (everywhere between Maine, Washington DC and Pittsburgh.) The company grew in popularity under Vince J McMahon, they became the World Wide Wrestling Federation and disassociated itself from the NWA umbrella group, setting itself up as an alternative with its own champions etc, though the company stuck to its NWA approved territory. Vince K McMahon, the current owner, formed Titan Sports and bought his Dad's share of the WWWF from under him. His plan was to make the company and genuinely worldwide phenomena with regular TV shows etc. It was at this point that it became WWF and started touring all over America, syndicating TV shows to local TV and selling videos through Titan Sports' Colosseum Video imprint, basically breaking the unwritten laws of regionalsim upon which wrestling had been based for decades.

n 2000, the World Wildlife Fund (also WWF), an environmental organization now called the World Wide Fund for Nature, sued the World Wrestling Federation. A British court agreed that Titan Sports had violated a 1994 agreement which had limited the permissible use of the WWF initials overseas, particularly in merchandising.[11] On May 5, 2002, the company quietly changed all references on its website from "WWF" to "WWE", while switching the URL from WWF.com to WWE.com. The next day, a press release announced the official name change from World Wrestling Federation Entertainment, Inc. to World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc., or WWE, and the change was publicized later that day during a telecast of Monday Night Raw, which emanated from the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, Connecticut. For a short time, WWE used the slogan "Get The 'F' Out."[12] The company had also been ordered by court to stop using the old WWF Attitude logo on any of its properties and to censor all past references to WWF, as they no longer owned the trademark to the initials WWF in 'specified circumstances'.[13] Despite litigation, WWE is still permitted use of the original WWF logo, which was used from 1984 through 1997, as well as the "New WWF Generation" logo, which was used from 1994 through 1998. Furthermore, the company may still make use of the full "World Wrestling Federation" and "World Wrestling Federation Entertainment" names without consequence.(source: Wikipedia) It states in the Guinness world records 2009 that they changed it because the world wildlife funds sued them. So they changed from world wrestling foundation to world wrestling entertainment.
