if it is direct fire wasted spark each coil has 2 posts for spark plug wires and fires twice per revolution, so one coil would run cylinder 2 and than 6 or whatever the opposing cylinder would be. 3 coils would run a total of 6 cylinders. generally direct fire only refers to not having a distributor
There is an ignition coil connected to the top of each spark plug...so if you have a 6 cylinder motor, you have 6 plugs and 6 coils.
The easiest way to test ignition coils on a 1992 Mustang 2.3 is to use an ohmmeter on the leads going into the coils.
An ignition coil generally looks like a cylinder with a second cylindrical temp at one end. On top of that same and, there are two primary terminals. Inside of an ignition coil is an iron core surrounded by coils of thin wire.
Under ignition coils
For the 4.6 liter V8 engine in a 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis : The firing order is ( 1 - 3 - 7 - 2 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 8 ) It has the Coil On Plug ( C.O.P. ) ignition system with ( 8 ) individual coils The engine cylinder locations are numbered : firewall 4 - 8 3 - 7 2 - 6 1 - 5 front of vehicle
It depends upon cylinder in car. 3 ignition coils - 3 cylinder engine. 4 ignition coils- 4 cylinder engine.
Separate ignition coils for each cylinder. Commonly known as direct ignition.

2 on the 4 cylinder engine or 6 on the 6 cylinder engine.
# 2 coil / spark plug / engine cylinder is on the passenger side of the engine , 2nd from the front of the engine (coil on plug ignition )
The ignition coil is attached the cylinder 1. It's a metal box that the spark plug is attached to. On the 2.0L engine, there are two coils mounted in the cylinder head atop the engine.

It depends on displacement of the engine. If you have 2.2L 4 cylinder, then it has 2 of them. If you have 3L V6 then there are 6 of them.
This engine actually has 6 ignition coils, one per cylinder. They are located on top of the valve covers.
follow your spark plug wires from your engine to the ignition coils (the other part the spark plug wires attach to) your ignition module is the rectangular shaped plate under the coils there are prongs which attach it to the coils and a wiring harness attached to the bottom. this might help as well. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_Test_ignition_module_1998_Saturn_SL
On the V6 engine, it is under the ignition coils on the top rear of the engine. O the 4 cylinder, it is bolted to the top of the engine cover, on the driver side. There is an electrical connector plugged into it. More info here... www.JustAutoRepair.com
