Cubism started in Paris (France) in the early 20th Century, when Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque started to cooperate very closely by visiting their ateliers daily and exchanging all their ideas and new visual inventions in the years 1907 - 1914. Appolinaire became soon the art critic who connected himself to Cubism and published a lot in those years.

Then Braque had to join the French army in World War 1 (Picasso was not French!) and was severely injured in 1915. He recovered but was also changed a lot in his personality; their close relationship in making Cubist art was ended by then.

See the quotes by Picasso and Braque.

"Almost every evening ( around 1908, fh), either I went to Braque's studio or Braque came to mine. Each of us had to see what the other had done during the day. We criticized each other's work (a remark Picasso told Francoise Gilot already in December 1908)"

from "Futurism", ed. By Didier Ottinger; Centre Pompidou / 5 Continents Editions, Milan, 2008, p. 311, note 721 (art quotes, Pablo Picasso)

"At that time (around 1907/08) I was very friendly with Picasso. Our temperaments were very different, but we had the same idea. Later on it became clear, Picasso is Spanish and I am French; as everyone knows that mean a lot of differences, but during those days the differences did not count… …We were living in Montmarte, we used to meet every day, we used to talk… …In those years Picasso and I said things to each other that nobody will ever say again, that nobody could say any more… …It was rather like a pair of climbers roped together."

from a conversation with Dora Vallier, 1954; as quoted in "Letters of the great artists - from Ghiberti to Gainsborough -", Richard Friedenthal, Thames and Hudson , London, 1963

Picasso and Braques both were looking for a way to show different viewpoints on a two dimensional surface.

In 1907 Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque created cubism, that used geometric designs to recreate reality to the viewers mind.

Cubism is often divided into two phases - the Analytic phase 1907-12, and the Synthetic phase 1913 through the 1920s.

The Cubists broke from centuries of tradition in their painting by rejecting the single viewpoint. Instead they used an analytical system in which three-dimensional subjects were fragmented and redefined from several different points of view simultaneously. The movement was conceived as 'a new way of representing the world', and assimilated outside influences, such as African art, as well as new theories on the nature of reality, such as Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

cubism was started by braque a development that took from 1907-1909 the painting of this development:

trees and viaduct at lestaque

viaduct at lestaque

houses at lestaque

violin and pallet (fully progressed to cubism)

all are by braque. Picasso (a good friend of braque) created synthetic cubism which is more collage like. Picasso is mainly know for creating cubism as although braque created cubism Picasso painted more cubist pictures and therefore is more thought of as the creator od cubism.

In cubist artworks, objects are broken up, analyzed, and re-assembled in an abstracted form-instead of depicting objects from one viewpoint, the artist depicts the subject from a multitude of viewpoints to represent the subject in a greater context.

The idea of cubism came about from a want to present a subject in a way that a photo could not.

Cubists tried to look at what ever they were painting from all sides and perspectives. then they integrated the different views into one picture. you may see part of a newspaper straight on, and part of a table side on, and such. they felt that this gave more of an impression of what the subject was like that one perspective did.
