Since I live in CA I have been through several earthquakes. Not all quakes are the same. Some roll while others shift up and down. When they first start you may feel a mild shaking that gets more intense. Books, items on shelves may fall off, hanging lamps or plants will start to swing. There is a "rumble" that you can hear. I often don't move anymore when one starts and just sit through it. If it feels violent, depending on where I am, I would seek cover. If you are in area of high buildings never go out into the street since parts of the building can fall/hit you. Find an open space outside, or go under a table, in a doorway, or get to a spot where things can't fall on you.
