I'm having that done now(98 S10). $380 to replace the chain. If they have to pull the oil pan to remove broken pieces, it will be $805. When they get it back together, they will do a compression test to see if any valves are bent. Don't know what it will cost to fix that.
A locksmith may be able to remove the broke key and make a new one. Or just replace the ignition.
most likely a clog in the line or wheel cylinder or maybe a broke spring
Having a piece break off your alternator bracket shouldn't have any impact on your timing chain unless the piece somehow hit it/got stuck, and that seems highly unlikely.
the timing,air hoses,relay switch maybe.
It's possible. There are only 2 ways to find out: 1. disassemble the engine and inspect for damage. 2. Put a new timing belt on and see if you have good compression across all cylinders. If you do, you probably didn't cause damage when the timing belt broke. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Put on the timing belt. The car will run fine or really poorly. It will be obvious if you have any bent or stuck valves. Y-THINK-Y
I have a Chevy Cavelier - year 2000. My timing belt broke at 172,000 with no warning. It was a belt though, not a timing chain.
I broke my key in the ignition and cant get it out. My only option I can see, is to replace to tumbler. How do I remove it?
You have to jack the motor up and remove the motor mount on the side of the motor and remove the timing chain cover wich is held on by seventeen 10mm bolts. I will tell you the timing chain kit will run you around 225.00 but if it has slipt or broke your gona have to have the head checked to see if you bent any valves
It has a timing belt. Mine broke after 140K miles.
i HAVE A 98 AND THE BELT BROKE TWICE AND DID NO DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE. The first time I was on freeway doing 75 and it broke. I have a '97 Contour and had no damage to the engine when my timing belt broke. Make sure you check your pulleys to ensure that the bearings are good. Mine were not and had to replace them.

When my timing belt broke on my 99 stratus 2.4 L 4 cyl it cost about $800 to have it repaired. I also had to replace the timing component kit because the broken belt damaged that. the dealership gave me a quote of about $700 just for the timing belt.
Most likely your timing belt broke.
no the valvesn will not be damaged this is not a intefearance motor
If your vehicle is at least 60,000 miles it is recommended you replace the timing chain. If your timing chain broke, your engine would NOT run because the timing chain is what rotates your engines camshafts to open and close the valves. Also, you would have some serious engine damage if you were driving and your engine suddenly just quit and it happened to be your timing chain. There really is no way to "check" a timing chain as it's hidden behind the belt area of the engine (if I'm not mistaken). If you're going to go through the labor of "checking" a timing chain, you might as well replace it, as the average timing chain job costs about $220, $200 of that being the labor.
Sounds like maybe the timing belt/timing chain broke or jumped. If it will not run at all, I'd guess broke.
Although the Aveo has an interference engine and the belt must be replaced every 60,000 miles it does not necessarily mean the engine has been destroyed when it broke. It may have only bent a valve or it may have busted a piston or both. In any case the engine can be repaired and it is not necessary to replace it. This is going to be a very expensive mistake for failure to replace the belt on time.
